On today’s agenda our group was scheduled to visit SU London Campus for a lecture and workshop followed by a visit to Wembley Park. During the lecture Professor Jeeyoon gave us an overview of olympism and the olympic movement. The powerpoint she showed us demonstrated some examples of the costs and other inputs that have gone into prior olympic games. We learned about olympism through reading through the publishings of the Olympic Charter as well as the olympic values. We then went into the olympic movement and its key actors. The purpose of the lecture was to give the group a brief overview of the olympics and its input factors in order to help us generate some ideas for possible research topics. We then moved from the classroom to the computer lab to begin thinking of research topics to discuss with Professor Kim and generating outlines of those selected topics.
After our time at SU London we were given an hour for lunch in the area. We quickly got food at a local Italian restaurant. Later in the afternoon we went to the Wembley stadium which hosted the olympics in 1948 and 2012. We had an audio tour giving a historical background of the futbol pitch followed by a tour given by Domnic who has worked at Wembley for many years and has a vast knowledge of its history. I found this tour was quite enjoyable for everyone in the group, whether a huge fan of soccer or not (or as they call it fútbol). After Wembley we took the tube to Abbey Road which a historical landmark notoriously known from the setting of the Beatles album cover. It was very interesting to view this landmark because it is in the middle of a busy road so watching tourists struggle to take photos was quite funny. The area surrounding the landmark had a lot of beautiful and new apartment buildings. After Abbey road, we made our way to the bus stop and managed to pass by Lord’s cricket grounds. However, being that our group was very tired and hungry we did not take much time to look at it. We took the bus to get to an entrance for the tube to get back to King’s Cross. From there we walked around the Kings across area and ended up in an area of nicer restaurants along a small body of water. As a group we walked into Bar Block and somehow were able to get seated right away despite having a party of 12. All of us were very happy with our food and the service. Overall we had a wonderful day in London by learning a lot through in class and out of classroom experiences
